Textiles, unlike most fine art objects, exhibit deterioration due to their utilitarian use. Photochemical and Thermochemical degradation results in dye fading and embrittlement. Biological deterioration caused by microorganisms and insects promote stains and complete areas of loss. Physical damage due to inappropriate mechanical stress further bolsters the inevitable and accelerates inherent weakness of fibers.
The stabilization and restoration of these unstable objects require the greatest attention. Establishing historical and sentimental significance is most critical before determining treatment.

Appropriate cleaning by hand with neutral soaps may be conducted depending upon preliminary analysis of the fibers and weaving techniques.
Supplemental weaving for areas of loss may then be carried out respectful of the principles of conservation and restoration.
